Hearts of Oak commemorate 25 years since May 9 disaster

Hearts of Oak have paid a heartfelt tribute to the 127 supporters who lost their lives on May 9, 2001, following a league match against Asante Kotoko in what remains Africa’s worst stadium disaster.

The tragedy, still the deadliest in Ghana’s sporting history, continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of safety, discipline, and respect at football venues nationwide.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary, the Accra-based club shared an emotional message on social media: “Never Again. A tragedy that changed Ghana football forever. As we remember the 127 fans we lost, we renew the pledge: Never Again. Forever in our hearts.”

Hearts have planned a series of activities to honour the victims and are expected to observe a minute of silence ahead of their Ghana Premier League fixture against Aduana Stars on Sunday.

May 9 remains a solemn day of remembrance, reflection, and unity, reinforcing the ongoing call for zero tolerance toward stadium violence.
