Former Ghana national football team captain Asamoah Gyan delivered an emotional tribute to veteran coach J. E. A. Sarpong, the man credited with discovering his talent, during his unveiling as ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and colts football.
Rising from Ghana’s vibrant youth football system, Gyan stepped into his new ambassadorial role at a lively, well-attended ceremony in Accra on Wednesday.
The ceremony drew a host of notable figures from the worlds of sports and politics, with coach Sarpong standing out among the distinguished guests.
Coach Sarpong’s presence sparked a touching reunion with Gyan, who paused during the ceremony to honor the man who helped shape his football journey.
Sarpong first crossed paths with Gyan at Accra Academy, where he nurtured and refined the young striker’s raw talent in those formative years.
As a heartfelt gesture, Gyan presented his former coach with a jersey and reminisced about the memorable moments they shared on and off the pitch.
Gyan also warmly acknowledged the presence of his former teammates, including Stephen Appiah, Prince Tagoe, and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, who joined in the celebration.
Reflecting on his new role, Gyan expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ghana Football Association for entrusting him with this honor.
“I am deeply honored by this recognition. I want to thank the President and the Executive Council of the GFA for the confidence they have shown in me by giving me this responsibility. Ghana football has shaped my life, and I will continue to serve the country with commitment and passion,” he stated.
Gyan stands as a true icon in African football, still holding the titles of Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and Africa’s top scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
