The Tarkwa and Aboso (TnA) Stadium has been given a major boost, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded it Category 2 Stadium Approval. This means the stadium can now host CAF youth and women’s national team qualifiers, along with Preliminary Round matches in CAF interclub competitions.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed the approval, calling it a big step forward for Ghanaian football. It also means Medeama SC can host their 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Preliminary Round games in Tarkwa for the first time, as long as they meet CAF’s final competition requirements.
This achievement is the result of teamwork between the GFA, Medeama SC, stadium management, and other important partners. Their investment in upgrading the stadium helped it meet CAF’s infrastructure standards.
For Medeama and their fans, this certification is a big moment. It lets the current Ghana Premier League champions play their continental preliminary matches at home in Tarkwa, instead of having to travel elsewhere.
CAF’s approval, shared with GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, includes several requirements to improve safety, security, comfort, and the overall matchday experience for everyone involved—players, officials, fans, media, and other stakeholders.
CAF also asked that a few minor issues found during its technical inspection be fixed before the stadium hosts its next CAF match. The GFA and its partners have promised to make these improvements on time.
Getting Category 2 certification is another big step in Ghana’s efforts to improve football infrastructure and host more continental competitions. It also shows the GFA’s commitment to building top-quality sports facilities across the country.
