Coach Zito: Leave Appiah alone

Abdul Karim Zito, the coach of the national under-19 side, has staunchly defended Sudan coach, Kwesi Appiah, against criticism of his dual role as coach and a member of the Executive Council (ExCo) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). His unwavering support serves as a reassurance of the legitimacy of Appiah’s position.

Appiah, former coach of the Ghana Black Stars, is pressured to step down from the ExCo amid conflict of interest worries, given Ghana and Sudan’s shared group in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Zito highlighted that Kwasi Appiah is a professional who should be free to carry out his responsibilities without unwarranted intervention.

“People are talking about Kwesi Appiah but I don’t see why they should be talking about him. Those in the ExCo are they not having clubs? He said that Kwasi is a professional coach and the ExCo doesn’t pay him”.

He emphasized that Appiah’s coaching duties did not clash with his ExCo role, as he does not receive financial compensation from the ExCo. They already knew of his coaching commitments when he ran for and won his election.

“The ExCo knew Kwasi was still in coaching and yet they allowed him to stand election which he won before he had this opportunity”, he said.

Zito pointed out the hypocrisy in demanding Appiah’s resignation while other ExCo members also maintain club affiliations. He supported Appiah’s right to continue in both roles and urged him to focus on his coaching responsibilities, addressing the concerns of the audience.

Zito not only defended Appiah’s dual role but also showed unwavering faith in his capabilities. He accepted that Sudan’s victory against Ghana in the qualifiers was a testament to football’s competitive nature, instilling confidence in Appiah’s leadership.

“For me, I am behind Kwasi hundred percent; he should keep quiet and do his job; if he is able to beat us, fine, and if we also beat him, fine.’’
