Former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan has disclosed that he struggled with depression about a year ago, while encouraging people to speak openly and seek help during challenging periods in their lives.
On Wednesday, the former Black Stars captain shared his heartfelt story during a moving ceremony at the Pelican Hotel in Accra, where the Ghana Football Association named him an ambassador.
“About a year ago, I went through some personal challenges that led to depression,” Gyan shared during the event.
“Anyone can experience these situations.”
The event celebrated Gyan’s remarkable legacy in Ghanaian football and marked his official introduction as an ambassador for the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With 51 international goals, Gyan stands as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and is hailed as one of the nation’s football legends.
The former striker donned Ghana’s colors at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups, etching his name in history by netting the country’s first World Cup goal against the Czech Republic in 2006.
As ambassador, Gyan will lead spirited campaigns and fan initiatives designed to unite and energize support for the Black Stars as they prepare for the tournament in North America.
He will also serve as the face of the GFA at official events and champion the growth of Ghana’s national teams and youth football.
The occasion was attended by several football personalities, former players, corporate stakeholders, and members of the media.
