Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan showered Caleb Yirenkyi with praise after the young star dazzled in Ghana’s spirited 1-1 draw against Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on June 2.
The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder emerged as one of Ghana’s brightest stars, capping his stellar showing with the Black Stars’ lone goal as the team gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond his goal, Yirenkyi impressed with calm control, sharp movement, and a vital spark in Ghana’s attack, earning admiration for a performance that seemed far beyond his years.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Gyan described the midfielder as a special talent whose development has been nothing short of impressive.
“Caleb is a natural talent. The way he is progressing is truly remarkable. Everyone saw what he brought to the game—not just the goal, but also his positioning, passing, movement, and the way he supported attacks,” Gyan said.
The former Sunderland striker noted that Yirenkyi’s influence extended well beyond his goal, praising his tactical intelligence and the way he shaped the flow of the match.
Adding a touch of humor, Gyan mentioned former Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah, playfully suggesting that the number three jersey has a knack for turning its wearers into goal scorers for Ghana.
“He’s not the first player to score while wearing the number three shirt. Jonathan Mensah did the same, so perhaps there’s something special about that jersey number,” he joked.
Meanwhile, Yirenkyi and his Black Stars teammates have touched down in the United States, ready to tackle the final phase of their World Cup preparations.
Ghana’s next challenge awaits in a friendly clash with Jamaica on June 10, setting the stage for their Group L journey at the tournament.
Drawn into a group with England, Croatia, and Panama, the four-time African champions are determined to break through to the knockout rounds for the first time since their unforgettable 2010 World Cup run in South Africa.
