African football’s governing body, CAF, has unanimously backed Gianni Infantino to continue as FIFA president through 2031.
CAF’s 54 member associations agreed on the endorsement during a meeting on April 29, 2026, in Vancouver, Canada, led by CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
CAF confirmed that all its member associations support Infantino ahead of the next FIFA Congress, showing a united African position in global football.
Because Africa has a strong voting bloc in FIFA, this support gives Infantino a significant advantage as he prepares for the 2027 presidential election.
Infantino was first elected in 2016 and has already served three terms, including a first term that started partway through a cycle. There is still debate about whether that initial period counts toward FIFA’s three-term limit, which could affect his eligibility for another term.
Under Infantino’s leadership, African football has benefited from FIFA initiatives, including more World Cup spots and additional development funding through the FIFA Forward program. With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams, more African countries will take part in the 2026 tournament.
The next FIFA presidential election will be held at the 77th FIFA Congress in 2027, which Morocco will host.
CAF’s support gives Infantino a much stronger position as he aims for another term as head of world football.
