WORLD CUP 2026: Ghana become Africa’s most successful World Cup team after Panama win

Ghana made history on Wednesday, defeating Panama 1-0 in Toronto to become the African nation with the most FIFA World Cup victories.

The Black Stars recorded their sixth World Cup win in 16 matches, surpassing Nigeria at the top of Africa’s all-time standings. Nigeria also has six World Cup victories but achieved them in 21 matches, giving Ghana a better win percentage.

The historic triumph came courtesy of a disciplined and determined display against Panama in Ghana’s opening Group L fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After a difficult first half in which chances were few and far between, the Black Stars raised their level significantly after the interval.

The introductions of Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Brandon Thomas-Asante added energy, pace, and creativity to the attack, helping Ghana gain control of the contest and eventually find the breakthrough.

The victory earned Ghana three valuable points in their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages and elevated Carlos Queiroz’s side above some of Africa’s most accomplished football nations in the World Cup record books.

Cameroon, Africa’s first World Cup quarter-finalists, sit third on the list with five wins from 26 matches, while Morocco and Senegal have each recorded five victories from 23 and 11 matches respectively.

Most FIFA World Cup victories by African nations:

  1. Ghana – 6 wins (16 matches)
  2. Nigeria – 6 wins (21 matches)
  3. Cameroon – 5 wins (26 matches)
  4. Morocco – 5 wins (23 matches)
  5. Senegal – 5 wins (11 matches)

Since making their World Cup debut in 2006, Ghana have consistently established themselves as one of Africa’s strongest performers on football’s biggest stage.

The Black Stars reached the Round of 16 in Germany 2006 before producing a historic run to the quarter-finals in South Africa 2010, becoming only the third African nation to reach the last eight of the tournament.

Their latest victory over Panama adds another milestone to that proud legacy and further reinforces Ghana’s status as one of Africa’s most successful World Cup teams.

With challenging Group L fixtures against England and Croatia still ahead, the Black Stars will be hoping this record-breaking triumph provides the momentum for another memorable World Cup campaign.
