Tom Saintfiet exits Mali coaching role after standout two-year period

Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet has officially resigned as head coach of the Mali national football team, ending his two-year stint in charge.

The 53-year-old announced his decision on Wednesday via Instagram, where he expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who supported him during his tenure.

“I want to thank my players, staff, FEMAFOOT, the government, the media, and especially the fans for an incredible two years in Mali,” Saintfiet said.

During his time with the Eagles, Saintfiet delivered a strong run of results, losing just two of the 17 competitive matches under his leadership. Across all competitions, including friendlies, he recorded nine wins, eight draws, and three defeats.

A standout moment of his tenure came at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he guided Mali to the quarter-finals.

Prior to his role with Mali, Saintfiet managed the Gambia national football team from 2018 to 2024, earning widespread praise for developing the team.

Having previously expressed interest in coaching Ghana, Saintfiet could re-emerge as a candidate for the Black Stars job after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when the Ghana Football Association is expected to decide on a long-term head coach.
