Somali Prime Minister welcomes Omar Artan despite World Cup disappointment

Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, warmly welcomed international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan to his office in Mogadishu, applauding the official’s unwavering professionalism, perseverance, and resilience amid his exclusion from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Artan recently returned to Somalia after being denied entry into the United States, where he was scheduled to participate in FIFA’s pre-World Cup seminar for match officials selected to officiate at the tournament.

This setback dashed the 34-year-old’s hopes of making history as the first Somali referee to take the field at football’s most prestigious competition.

During their meeting, Prime Minister Barre celebrated Artan’s unwavering dedication and determination, qualities that have propelled him through the ranks of African and international refereeing. He urged Artan to keep his eyes on the future and to continue striving for excellence, even in the face of disappointment.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Artan would remain a shining ambassador for Somalia on the world stage, calling him an inspiration to young Somalis who dream of achieving greatness in sports and beyond.

Across Somalia, Artan’s achievements have sparked widespread celebration. Since earning his FIFA accreditation in 2018, he has steadily risen to become one of Africa’s most respected referees.

His trailblazing journey includes becoming the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations and earning acclaim as one of the continent’s top match officials. His selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was hailed as a milestone for Somali football and a proud reflection of the nation’s sporting progress.

Though circumstances outside his control kept him from the tournament, Artan has been embraced with overwhelming support from government leaders, football authorities, players, and fans alike.

Upon his return to Mogadishu, Artan was greeted with heartfelt celebrations, as many honored not only his achievements but also the historic significance of his remarkable journey.

To many Somalis, Artan’s story stands as a beacon of determination and hope. Even though he will not officiate at this year’s World Cup, his achievements have already earned him a place among the nation’s sporting pioneers.

Looking ahead to future international assignments, Artan remains a source of immense pride for Somalia and African football, inspiring the next generation of referees to chase their dreams on the global stage.
