Thierry Henry has resigned as manager of France Under-21s after guiding them to a silver medal in the 2024 Olympics. The 47-year-old signed a two-year deal to manage the side in 2023.
Henry was the head coach for the under 23 team at the just ended Olympic games at home, where France lost 5-3 in the final against Spain in extra time.
The contract between the former Arsenal and Barcelona strikers was supposed to last until after next year’s European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia. However, Henry has resigned.
“Winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games for my country will remain one of the greatest pride of my life,” said Henry in a statement.
“I am incredibly grateful to the federation, the players, the staff, and the supporters who allowed me to live a magical experience.”
The France Football Federation regrets Henry’s decision, but it acknowledges his successful achievement of the set objectives.
Henry’s record as the under-21s coach saw him win four out of six matches. Additionally, he achieved a sound record of eight wins out of eleven games as the coach of the Olympic team, which featured overage players Alexandre Lacazette and Jean-Philippe Mateta as strikers.
France won its group by defeating the USA, Guinea, and New Zealand. It then beat Argentina and Egypt in the knockout stages before ultimately losing to Spain in the final.
Henry scored 51 goals throughout his playing career and earned 123 caps for France.
