Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to focus on rebuilding the Black Stars for the long term rather than making the immediate pursuit of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title the priority.
Kingston made the remarks following Ghana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars were eliminated after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the first half, ending Ghana’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Speaking on Joy Prime, the former Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics winger argued that the current squad is still a work in progress and needs time to develop before it can realistically challenge for major honours.
“We shouldn’t be thinking about winning the AFCON because we do not have a team,” Kingston said.
The former Black Stars midfielder believes Ghana must adopt a clear long-term strategy centred on player development, continuity and proper planning if the national team is to return to the top of African football.
Although Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 32, the Black Stars reached the knockout stage for the first time since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
The four-time African champions will now shift their focus to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers as they begin the process of rebuilding for future success.
