Kotoko commemorate 25 years since tragic May 9 disaster

Asante Kotoko have paid tribute to the 127 fans who lost their lives in the May 9, 2001, tragedy after their match against Hearts of Oak, which remains Africa’s worst stadium disaster.

This tragic event, still the worst of its kind in Ghana’s history, is a lasting reminder of the importance of tolerance and safety at football matches. The club continues to stress this message.

In a statement on social media, Kotoko said: “As we mark 25 years since that painful day, Asante Kotoko SC solemnly remembers the 127 football fans who lost their lives in the May 9 disaster. We join the entire football fraternity in honoring their memory and reaffirm our call for zero tolerance toward stadium violence.”

To mark the anniversary, the Porcupine Warriors have planned several activities. These include a minute of silence before their upcoming match against Eleven Wonders FC on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Kumasi-based team has faced a tough season and is currently in tenth place in the Ghana Premier League.
