Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has signed a one-year contract with Sheffield United, starting an exciting new chapter with the Championship club.
The 34-year-old forward joins Bramall Lane as a free agent after finishing his time with Leicester City last season.
Ayew’s arrival completes Sheffield United’s 25-man squad, and the experienced Ghanaian international will go straight into Chris Wilder’s plans.
Ayew last played competitively at the World Cup, starting all four of Ghana’s matches as the Black Stars reached the knockout stage, including a 0-0 draw with England.
Wilder said he was delighted to sign the experienced forward and praised the club for moving quickly to complete the transfer.
“I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free agent market, and things did move quite quickly, so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us,” Wilder said.
The Sheffield United manager pointed out Ayew’s top-level experience and his ability to play in different attacking positions.
“We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree.”
“He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career, which gives us plenty of options,” he added.
Ayew shared his excitement about joining the club and voiced his determination to hit the ground running.
“I’m really, really pleased to be here. The manager and the club made a great effort to get me here as quick as possible,” Ayew said.
“It happened really, really quickly because I was in Ghana and the manager called me last week. I didn’t think twice; I just took the opportunity.”
Ayew has played over 500 competitive matches in his career, representing clubs such as Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace, and Leicester City before joining Sheffield United.
Now, Ayew begins a new chapter in English football as Sheffield United look to strengthen their attack for the upcoming season.
