On a jubilant Tuesday at Jubilee House, Medeama, Nations FC, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies beamed with pride as they presented President John Mahama with the hard-won trophies that crowned their efforts.
Following a season of triumph and the honor of flying Ghana’s flag in continental contests, the three clubs received a special invitation to the nation’s seat of power.
Medeama stepped forward with the Ghana Premier League trophy, basking in their new champion status, while Nations FC gleefully displayed the MTN FA Cup, celebrating a landmark victory in their history.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies, not to be outdone, showcased the Women’s Premier League trophy after seizing the top-flight crown and making Ghana proud as runners-up in the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
The visit offered the clubs a rare opportunity to engage with President Mahama, exchanging thoughts on the journey of Ghanaian club football and the hurdles faced beyond the nation’s borders. Mahama lauded their achievements and honored the unwavering passion fueling Ghana’s football scene.
“Our fortunes at club level have gone down, and we have to find out why our club-level soccer is not as good as it used to be. “We should be able to build more giants, winners on the continent,” Mahama remarked.
He told the teams they could count on government help through the newly created Sports Development Fund, and called for more private sector investment.
“I’ll assure you that help is at hand. We’ve established the sports development fund and the government will put some money into it. But we’re also appealing to the business sector to put in some more money,” he added.
In recognition of their remarkable feats, the government awarded Medeama $30,000, Nations FC $20,000, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies $10,000.
This financial boost is set to ignite the clubs’ ambitions, both on home soil and across Africa. Medeama will carry Ghana’s hopes in the CAF Champions League, while Nations FC embarks on their CAF Confederation Cup journey.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies, fueled by their domestic success, set their sights even higher after their impressive run to the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers final.
The gathering at Jubilee House united Ghana’s trio of champions, symbolizing a collective stride as the nation aspires to shine ever brighter on the African club football stage.
