The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has passionately defended bringing Baba Rahman back into the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, firmly stating that the choice was driven solely by his outstanding performance and merit.
After nearly four years away, the 31-year-old defender’s return to the national team has sparked lively debate among fans and football pundits alike.
Speaking on Channel One TV, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum backed head coach Carlos Queiroz amid discussions surrounding the selection, emphasizing that squad decisions remain the sole responsibility of the technical team.
Rahman had stepped away from the national team setup after being booed by sections of fans in Kumasi in 2023.
Rahman’s comeback means Derrick Kohn misses out on selection, as Ghana gears up for its friendly clash with Wales in Cardiff.
Addressing criticism from Kohn’s supporters, Twum emphasized that Rahman’s selection is a reward for his impressive recent form and consistent performances.
“Ultimately, the decision belongs to the coach, Carlos Queiroz. Was it based on merit? Absolutely. Baba had a very good season and has been away from the national team for a long time,” Twum said.
“Let me also state that while Carlos may have played a key role in convincing him to return, Otto Addo also wanted him back during his tenure. At the end of the day, Carlos Queiroz is the one who makes the final decisions regarding team selection.”
