The future of Senegal’s head coach Pape Thiaw is expected to be the main topic at the Senegalese Football Federation’s emergency executive committee meeting in Dakar on Saturday.
The meeting will determine the Teranga Lions’ direction after their disappointing 3-2 loss to Belgium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32.
Senegal appeared poised to advance after taking the lead, but conceded twice after the 85th minute as Belgium staged a late comeback.
Thiaw, who led the Teranga Lions to the knockout stage, maintains he signed a contract extension with the national team during the World Cup.
However, uncertainty remains about the federation’s commitment to retaining him as head coach.
According to French newspaper L’Équipe, Thiaw’s position is increasingly uncertain, with growing debate in Senegalese football circles about his suitability to lead the team forward.
The report also notes that discussions have begun regarding potential replacements if the federation opts for a change.
Former France international Patrick Vieira, born in Dakar, is among those linked to the role and reportedly has strong support from influential figures in Senegalese football.
Vieira has been out of work since leaving Genoa in November 2025 and is considered by some officials an ideal candidate due to his playing pedigree and managerial experience in European football.
The former Arsenal captain has also managed OGC Nice and Crystal Palace, further strengthening his credentials as a potential successor.
As Senegal aims to remain among Africa’s top football nations, Saturday’s FSF meeting could be pivotal in deciding whether Thiaw stays or the federation pursues new leadership.
