Hugo Broos has confirmed that his tenure as South Africa head coach has ended, though he may remain involved with the South African Football Association (SAFA) in another capacity.
The 74-year-old, who took charge of Bafana Bafana in June 2021, leaves after a successful four-year tenure, making him the longest-serving head coach in the national team’s history.
Broos had previously announced plans to retire from coaching after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, South Africa’s historic run to the Round of 32 led to speculation about a possible extension.
Broos has now ended speculation, confirming his coaching career is over but indicating he is open to an advisory or technical role.
In an interview with Belgian publication Voetbalnieuws, Broos stated his decision to retire from coaching is final.
“Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible. If they need me for something else, perhaps in scouting, that is something else.
“But football is no longer going to be a part of my life 24 hours a day.”
Broos also revealed he has spoken with SAFA president Danny Jordaan, who hopes to retain him in a different capacity.
“I have already had a conversation with the chairman of the South African federation. He would like to keep me, but in a different role, as an advisor or something like that,” he explained.
“I will return at the end of July to say a final farewell. I am curious to see what he will propose to me.”
During his tenure, Broos revitalised South African football, leading Bafana Bafana to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and to their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout stage.
Although stepping away from daily coaching duties, Broos said he would welcome the chance to contribute to South African football in a less demanding role.
“My wife is happy that I’m quitting, but she’s already warned me: ‘Just make sure you don’t get in my way!'” He joked.
“Suppose I have to be in South Africa for a few weeks every two months—why not? Better that than being a nuisance at home because I have nothing to do.”
Broos is expected to return to South Africa later this month to continue discussions about a possible advisory role with SAFA, as Bafana Bafana begin a new chapter after one of their most successful periods.
