Egypt has announced it will bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Ministry of Youth and Sports says the country is confident it can successfully organize Africa’s top football tournament.
A Ministry spokesperson said Egypt has the stadiums and experience needed to host the event. The next step is for the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) to send its official bid to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“We are ready to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations. We have the required infrastructure and capabilities. The matter is now with the Egyptian Football Association to contact CAF and submit a hosting request,” the spokesperson said.
This announcement comes after CAF invited its member countries to submit bids to host the 2028 tournament.
Egypt is one of Africa’s most successful football nations and has a lot of experience hosting big international events. Most recently, Egypt hosted AFCON in 2019 as a replacement and was widely praised for its organization and top-notch facilities.
Egypt has several modern stadiums, such as Cairo International Stadium, Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, and new venues in the New Administrative Capital. These facilities help make Egypt a strong candidate to host the tournament again.
Now that the bidding process has started, the Egyptian Football Association is expected to hold discussions before officially expressing interest to CAF.
Egypt’s announcement is likely to increase competition for the 2028 hosting rights, as other African countries are also expected to join the race soon.
CAF will choose the host country based on important factors like stadiums, accommodation, transport, security, and overall ability to organize the event before awarding the hosting rights for Africa’s biggest football tournament.
