President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s football authorities to begin immediate preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, emphasizing that early planning is essential to build on the Black Stars’ strong 2026 campaign.
During an inspection of the Ho Sports Stadium, Mahama praised the national team’s World Cup performance and urged stakeholders to sustain momentum by adopting a long-term development plan for the next tournament.
The President stated that retaining the current squad and maintaining continuity among the coaching staff could position Ghana to compete strongly in both the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“We need to start preparing for the next World Cup. The Black Stars did well; nobody gave them a chance. People predicted they would crash out in the group stage, but they reached the Round of 32.
“I’m sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach [Carlos Queiroz] to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions.”
The Black Stars surpassed expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the newly introduced Round of 32 under Carlos Queiroz’s leadership.
Ghana opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Panama, followed by a goalless draw against England, continuing their strong record in second group-stage matches at the World Cup.
Although the Black Stars lost narrowly to Croatia in their final Group L match, they advanced to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s top third-placed teams. Their World Cup run ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.
