WORLD CUP 2026: Tuchel: Ghana made it tough after England’s goalless draw

England manager Thomas Tuchel has hailed Ghana’s discipline and defensive resilience after the Black Stars held the Three Lions to a goalless draw in their Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite dominating possession, England struggled to break down Ghana’s compact, well-organized defense, which limited clear-cut scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

“Credit to them. I rarely saw a physical performance like that from a team,” Tuchel told the BBC.

“They defended with 10 players in a very deep block, which made it difficult for us. They were disciplined and physical in every position, so it took us time to find our rhythm.

“Everything was our responsibility to create chances, but at the same time, we had to be careful not to concede on the counterattack.”

England finished with 79 percent possession—the highest recorded by a team that failed to score in a World Cup match in the past 60 years—but could not find a way past Ghana’s resolute backline.

The result leaves both teams on four points at the top of Group L heading into the final round of matches, with England set to face Panama while Ghana takes on Croatia in a decisive qualification showdown.
