Fulham boss Silva nears Benfica deal

Fulham manager Marco Silva is reportedly poised to seal a deal that would see him take the reins as Benfica’s new head coach.

The Portuguese tactician’s contract at Craven Cottage is set to expire this month, yet Fulham remain silent on any official announcement regarding his exit.

Although Fulham has put a contract extension on the table, Silva has yet to pledge his future to the club, as talks with Benfica are reportedly reaching their final stages.

Recent reports suggest that talks between Silva and the Portuguese giants have gathered pace, with both sides inching ever closer to striking a full agreement.

Benfica is searching for a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who recently left the club after accepting a three-year contract to take over as Real Madrid manager.

Mourinho, who returned for a second spell at Benfica in September, guided the club to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga before his departure.

Silva joined Fulham in July 2021 after leaving Everton and wasted no time in leading the club back to the Premier League, clinching promotion in his debut season.

With Silva at the helm, Fulham have cemented their place in the top flight, finishing last season in 11th on 52 points, matching Chelsea’s tally.

If the deal goes through, Silva will make a homecoming to lead one of Portugal’s most storied and successful clubs.
