Sir Kenny Dalglish undergoing cancer treatment, confirms former Liverpool star

Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has shared that he is currently undergoing treatment following a recent cancer diagnosis.

At 75, Dalglish admitted he had hoped to keep his health battle private, but an accidental social media post brought it into the public eye.

In a statement, Dalglish explained: “As many have now seen from my unintended social media post, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

“Thankfully, unlike my ability to use mobile technology, the treatment is progressing well.

“My preference would have been to keep this matter private, as I believe it should have remained. Unfortunately, my lack of technological expertise has made that impossible.”

Dalglish has also asked for privacy for himself and his loved ones as he continues his treatment journey.

“I would appreciate it if my family’s privacy and my own could be respected during this time,” he added.

The Liverpool legend expressed heartfelt gratitude to the medical professionals supporting him, commending their skill and compassion.

“As always, I am incredibly grateful to the wonderful medical staff who have shown exceptional care and discretion—not only towards me but to so many others. They deserve enormous credit for the work they do.”

Liverpool Football Club swiftly offered a message of support, reaffirming their deep affection and best wishes for one of their most cherished icons.

“The thoughts, support, and love of everyone at Liverpool FC remain firmly with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club said in a statement.

“The club also respectfully asks that his request for privacy be honored.”

Dalglish is celebrated as one of Liverpool’s all-time greats. During his glittering Anfield career from 1977 to 1990, he played 515 games, netted 172 goals, and was instrumental in securing eight league titles and three European Cups. He also found remarkable success as a manager, steering Liverpool to a historic league and FA Cup double as player-manager, and later guiding them to league triumphs in 1988 and 1990.0.

Beyond his Liverpool legacy, Dalglish famously led Blackburn Rovers to their sole Premier League title in 1995, and also took the helm at Newcastle United and Celtic.

Dalglish’s final stint as Liverpool manager came in 2011-2012, when he led the Reds to League Cup glory, ending the club’s six-year trophy drought.

On the international stage, Dalglish earned 102 caps for Scotland from 1971 to 1986, scoring 30 goals—a tally that still sees him share the title of Scotland’s all-time top scorer with the late Denis Law.
