Konate voices disappointment over Liverpool departure

France international Ibrahima Konate has voiced his sadness at missing the chance to say a proper goodbye to Liverpool supporters after it was confirmed he will depart the club this summer.

The 27-year-old defender arrived at Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million, embarking on a five-season journey at Anfield. Talks about a contract extension took place but ultimately stalled as the player and club could not see eye to eye on salary and valuation.

While on Merseyside, Konate featured in 183 matches and played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup triumphs.

In an emotional message shared on social media, the French center-back thanked supporters for their unwavering backing throughout his time at Liverpool.

“I want to thank you all for your love, energy, and incredible support during my time at Liverpool,” he wrote.

Konate confessed he felt especially heartbroken that he could not give the fans a fitting farewell during Liverpool’s last Premier League match of the season against Bournemouth.

“I’m deeply disappointed that I didn’t get the chance to say farewell at the last game. At the time, I had no idea it would be my final appearance in this shirt in front of the supporters,” he said.

The defender called Anfield a truly special place and shared that wearing the Liverpool shirt was a privilege he cherished every single day.

“Playing at Anfield was always an honor. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I will always carry Liverpool with me wherever I go. This farewell is not easy, but I feel it is time for a new challenge and the next chapter of my career.”

Liverpool also honored Konate, expressing gratitude for his contributions and sending their best wishes for his future endeavors.

Looking back on his Anfield days, Konate described his Liverpool journey as a tapestry woven with unforgettable memories, major triumphs, and friendships that will last a lifetime.

“We shared incredible moments together — triumphs, setbacks, trophies, challenges, friendships, and heartbreaking experiences that will stay with us forever, especially the loss of our brother Diogo Jota,” he said.

The Frenchman also shared that the past year had been especially challenging after losing his father, yet he made it clear that his dedication to Liverpool remained steadfast throughout.

“Losing my father was one of the toughest moments of my life, but even during those difficult times, my dedication to this club remained unchanged. I always gave everything I had for this badge.”
