Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has firmly dismissed allegations of playing any part in picking the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The national team is currently based in Cardiff, training with a provisional 28-man squad ahead of a friendly against Wales. Head coach Carlos Queiroz is set to trim the roster to 26 before unveiling the final squad for the tournament.
Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues, the Member of Parliament for Buem stressed that squad selection is solely the responsibility of the technical team and cited the absence of former captain Andre Ayew as proof that he exerted no influence.
“The fact that Andre Ayew was not included in the squad should make it clear that I had no hand in the selection process. As Sports Minister and a football supporter, I can express my opinions, but that is where my role ends,” Adams stated.
His remarks come amid ongoing debate over Ghana’s provisional World Cup squad, which includes several high-profile names while omitting several experienced players.
The Black Stars are set to face Wales on June 2 in their last warm-up match before heading to North America for the World Cup. Ghana will kick off its Group L journey against Panama on June 17, followed by showdowns with England and Croatia.
