Ghana’s national football team endured a 2-0 loss to Mexico in a lively pre-World Cup friendly at Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, played in the early hours of Saturday, May 23.
Ghana’s dreams took an early blow as a costly defensive slip in the opening minute handed Brian Gutiérrez of Club Deportivo Guadalajara the perfect opportunity to fire Mexico into the lead.
Under relentless Mexican pressure, the Black Stars were forced to defend deep. But in the 21st minute, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced a stunning close-range save, denying Gutiérrez a second goal and keeping Ghana in the contest.
After the break, Ghana returned to the pitch with renewed energy, carving out a series of promising chances in their determined hunt for an equalizer.
In the 51st minute, Felix Afena-Gyan unleashed a fierce drive that drew a spectacular save from Mexican goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo, who then sprang into action again to deny the striker’s quick follow-up and concede a corner.
Just moments later, winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi almost leveled the score with a thunderous long-range effort that crashed against the crossbar, leaving fans holding their breath.
Despite Ghana’s spirited comeback, Mexico struck again in the 54th minute as substitute Guillermo Martínez expertly controlled the ball and calmly slotted home with his left foot, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Black Stars pressed forward with relentless determination in search of a lifeline, but Mexico’s resolute defense stood tall, sealing a comfortable home victory in Puebla.
With this match behind them, Ghana now turns its attention to an upcoming pre-World Cup clash against Wales as preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensify.
The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against the Panama national football team on June 17, followed by the England national football team on June 23 and the Croatia national football team on June 27, in Group L.
