Asante Kotoko Executive Board Chairman James Osei Brown has held a landmark meeting with Accra Hearts of Oak Board Chairman Togbe Afede XIV, paving the way for a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening football governance and driving commercial growth in Ghana.
The high-level engagement, which comes shortly after the inauguration of Kotoko’s new three-member board on February 27, 2026, represents a rare show of unity between Ghana’s two most successful football clubs. Together, the clubs are seeking to use their combined influence to address longstanding structural and commercial challenges that have limited the growth of the Ghana Premier League.
Moving beyond their traditional rivalry off the pitch, both clubs have committed to closer collaboration through a corporate-led approach focused on enhancing commercial opportunities, promoting sustainable growth and modernising the administration of Ghanaian football.
The partnership comes at a pivotal time following a challenging 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season. Hearts of Oak finished third with 54 points, while Asante Kotoko ended the campaign in eighth place with 49 points.
Kotoko have since appointed South African coach Eric Tinkler as part of efforts to rebuild the club, making the new alliance an important step toward improving administrative efficiency and creating a stronger football ecosystem.
The two clubs also intend to build on previous collaborative initiatives, including their joint appeal to the Ghana Football Association in February 2025 calling for enhanced stadium safety measures.
Among the key priorities identified are securing joint commercial partnerships, developing unified matchday safety standards and supporting efforts to establish an autonomous Ghana Premier League.
Despite their renewed cooperation away from the field, both clubs stressed that the partnership will have no impact on their fierce rivalry whenever they meet in competition.
