Ghana Football Association president Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has announced that Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be unveiled on June 1.
He confirmed the development after the Ghana national football team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in an international friendly on Saturday morning.
Okraku emphasized that, despite the loss, the match truly served its purpose by giving Ghana’s rising stars and U-23 hopefuls a vital taste of international competition ahead of the Olympic qualifiers.
“Objective achieved! This game gave many of our U-23 players and others with limited national team experience the opportunity to perform on a big stage ahead of the Olympic qualifiers,” he wrote on social media.
He further added, “The World Cup squad will officially be announced on June 1. Let’s continue supporting our players.”
Okraku described the friendly as a crucial stage for evaluating fresh faces who have yet to cement their place in the senior squad.
“This was a major opportunity for our U-23 players to gain experience because they are not usually exposed to matches of this magnitude. The exposure they gained is extremely valuable,” he stated.
The GFA president pointed out that the technical team gained valuable insights by watching new and lesser-known talents up close.
“It also gave us the chance to properly evaluate players we may have only followed through reports before now,” he added.
Against Mexico, Ghana showcased a youthful lineup, offering homegrown and fringe players a golden opportunity to shine before the World Cup.
Okraku acknowledged the hurdles of quickly assembling an inexperienced team, yet urged fans to celebrate the bright moments and progress on display.
“With the little time the team had together, building cohesion was always going to be difficult. However, we will take the positives from the game as we move on to the next challenge against Wales,” he posted.
He applauded the squad’s young talents, calling them promising prospects who deserve patience, mentorship, and time to fully blossom.
“Our focus remains on these talented young players who have shown great potential. They are a group that needs collective support and proper development to achieve their goals,” he noted.
With eyes now set on their next friendly against Wales, Ghana continues to build momentum on the road to the World Cup.
The friendlies form part of Ghana’s build-up to the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Black Stars will be making their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance and have been drawn into Group L alongside the Panama national football team, the England national football team, and the Croatia national football team.
Ghana will begin its campaign against Panama on June 18, followed by England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
