Former CAF VP Nyantakyi Condemns AFCON 2025 Decision as Threat to Game

Kwesi Nyantakyi criticized the decision to overturn the AFCON final result, saying the Confederation of African Football did not follow the right regulations.

He explained that the rules used in this case are broad and are meant for situations where no specific rules apply. He said CAF ignored more detailed sections, especially Articles 88 to 106, which clearly list offences and their penalties.

Nyantakyi pointed out that protests or short walkouts often occur in important matches and should not be considered serious violations unless they lead to the game being abandoned.

Talking about the AFCON final, he said that, even though there was a brief walkout after a late penalty, the players returned and finished the match, so a forfeiture was not justified.

He also questioned how the decision was made, citing Law 5 of the Laws of the Game, which gives referees the final say on matters of fact during matches.

“The referee is the judge of facts,” Nyantakyi said, insisting that since the referee allowed the match to be completed, any contrary ruling lacks legal grounding.

He also warned that decisions like this could damage African football’s reputation, calling the reversal of a final result a threat to the sport’s integrity.

Nyantakyi cautioned that changing match results without a clear reason could erode public trust and prompt sponsors and stakeholders to question how transparent and consistent CAF’s decisions are.

His comments add to the ongoing debate over one of the most controversial decisions in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.
