Davor Šuker Insists Croatia Are Genuine Contenders, Not Underdogs

Former Croatia national football team star Davor Šuker believes the country has outgrown its underdog label following its recent success on the global stage.

Croatia have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Panama national football team, and Ghana national football team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking to FIFA, Šuker said Croatia’s consistent performances at recent World Cups have elevated their status in world football.

“Reaching the semi-finals again in Qatar confirmed that Croatia is no longer an underdog—it’s a nation with high standards,” he said.

The former striker, who helped Croatia finish third at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, added that the team should now be seen as genuine contenders rather than mere participants.

“When you finish as runners-up and then third at successive World Cups, you are competing for the trophy. Croatia won’t fear anyone,” he stated.

Croatia will open their campaign against England on June 17, before facing Panama on June 24 and Ghana on June 27.

As part of their preparations, Croatia are scheduled to play friendlies against Colombia national football team and Brazil national football team in March, followed by matches against Belgium national football team and Slovenia national football team in June.
