Egypt’s impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended heartbreakingly after the Pharaohs surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to defending champions Argentina in a thrilling Round of 16 clash.
The dramatic comeback secured Argentina’s place in the quarter-finals and marked the first time in FIFA World Cup history that defending champions had recovered from a two-goal deficit to win a match.
Egypt made a dream start, opening the scoring in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim powered home a close-range header from Marwan Attia’s inviting cross.
Argentina had an opportunity to equalize soon after when referee François Letexier awarded a penalty following a foul by Haissem Hassan inside the box. However, goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced a superb save, diving to his right to deny Lionel Messi from the spot.
The reigning world champions continued to pile on the pressure, with Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez both testing Shobeir, while Messi rattled the post with a powerful long-range strike.
Egypt thought they had doubled their advantage early in the second half after Mohamed Salah led a swift counter-attack and set up Mostafa Ziko to finish calmly. The goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a foul in the build-up.
The Pharaohs were not discouraged and eventually found their second goal in the 67th minute. Haissem Hassan released Ziko with a perfectly weighted pass, and the forward fired a first-time finish into the net to make it 2-0.
Argentina responded with urgency and began its comeback in the closing stages.

Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute, rising highest to head home a pinpoint cross from Messi.
Four minutes later, Messi leveled the contest with a moment of brilliance, meeting Gonzalo Montiel’s delivery with a stunning volley that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.
The defending champions completed the comeback deep into stoppage time when Enzo Fernández latched onto Lautaro Martínez’s cross and calmly slotted home the winner to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Although Egypt’s World Cup journey ended in disappointment, the Pharaohs leave the tournament with plenty of credit after pushing the reigning champions to the limit in one of the most memorable matches of the competition.

Argentina, meanwhile, marches on to the quarter-finals, keeping its title defense alive with a remarkable comeback that will be remembered as one of the defining moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
