Mamelodi Sundowns FC have been crowned CAF Champions League winners for the second time after edging AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final.
A tense 1-1 draw in Rabat on Sunday sealed the title for Sundowns, who made their slim 1-0 first-leg lead from Pretoria count.
The Moroccan side drew level on aggregate five minutes before halftime when Mohamed Hrimat converted from the penalty spot following a foul by Divine Lunga on Reda Slim.
Sundowns answered instantly. In the dying seconds of the first half, Teboho Mokoena fired a stunning half-volley that crashed off the crossbar and in, reclaiming the aggregate lead for the South Africans.
That spectacular goal proved the turning point, forcing AS FAR to chase two more goals under the away-goals rule.
The hosts were handed a lifeline in the 77th minute when a VAR review awarded them a second penalty, reigniting hope in the stadium.
Yet Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams rose to the occasion, diving low to his left to make a match-defining save and keep his team in front.
AS FAR as everything forward in the dying minutes, but Sundowns stood firm through eight tense minutes of stoppage time to secure the coveted trophy.
This triumph marks Sundowns’ return to continental glory, their first CAF Champions League title since 2016 and their second overall.
Along with the prestigious trophy, the South African champions pocket a record $6 million in prize money and secure a coveted spot at the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
For AS FAR, the defeat brought a painful end to an impressive campaign as they narrowly.
