Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew delivered a confident message ahead of Ghana’s crucial FIFA World Cup match against England, asserting the team believes it can compete with any opponent.
Ghana approaches Tuesday’s Group L encounter with added momentum, thanks to their dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, where Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner secured all three points in their tournament opener.
Speaking to Ghanafa.org, Ayew pointedly emphasized staying focused and approaching the competition with belief, one match at a time.
“We still have two very important games to play, and our focus is on taking things one match at a time,” Ayew said.
“Our attention is on the next match and securing three points. Once it’s over, we will turn to the final group match.”
Similarly, England began their campaign with an impressive 4-2 win over Croatia, and another victory could secure their place in the knockout stage. For Ghana, a positive result against England would greatly strengthen their position heading into the final Group L fixture against Croatia.
Ayew acknowledges the quality of England’s squad but emphasizes the Black Stars’ belief in themselves and readiness to rise to the occasion.
“It’s always difficult at the World Cup because there are no easy matches. Every team is competitive, but we believe in ourselves and know that anything is possible.”
A win over England would not only move Ghana closer to the knockout rounds, but also continue the Black Stars’ impressive record of never losing their second match at a FIFA World Cup.
Buoyed by their opening win over Panama, Ayew believes Ghana is ready for another major challenge as they pursue a place in the Round of 32.
