Ghana kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L encounter.
For much of the match, the contest struggled to come to life and appeared destined to end goalless. However, Caleb Yirenkyi emerged as the hero, scoring deep into stoppage time to secure all three points for the Black Stars.
The result sees Ghana join England on three points after the Three Lions recorded a 4-2 victory over Croatia earlier in the day.

Carlos Queiroz’s side left it late to claim the win, with Yirenkyi’s decisive strike capping a spirited second-half display and handing the Portuguese coach a winning start to Ghana’s World Cup journey.
Panama, coached by Thomas Christiansen, enjoyed long spells of control and arguably deserved at least a share of the points. However, they were unable to convert their chances and remain without a win in World Cup history, having now lost all four of their matches at the tournament.

Ghana struggled to find its rhythm in the opening half and did not register its first effort on target until the 45th minute. The Black Stars improved significantly after the break, with Antoine Semenyo playing a central role in many of their attacking moves.

The Manchester City forward was heavily involved in the build-up to the winning goal, initiating the move that ultimately led to Yirenkyi’s late breakthrough.
Panama also threatened on several occasions, with Cristian Martínez and Ismael Díaz both coming close in the closing stages, but neither could find the finishing touch needed to break the deadlock.
The victory lifts Ghana to second place in Group L behind England on goal difference, while Panama sits third following the opening round of matches.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to a highly anticipated clash against England on June 23, while Panama will look to bounce back against Croatia later the same day.
