Riyad Mahrez retires from international football after Algeria’s 2026 World Cup exit

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has retired from international football after the Desert Foxes were knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The veteran winger played his last game for Algeria in their 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the Round of 32, ending a remarkable international career.

After the match, the former Manchester City star told beIN Sports that it was his final game for the national team.

“That was my last match for the national team,” Mahrez said.

Mahrez steps away as one of the greatest players in Algerian football, after spending over a decade at the center of the national team’s achievements.

At 35, he played 119 times for the Desert Foxes, scored 40 goals, and made 45 assists, proving himself as both a creative force and a match-winner.

His best moment was in 2019, when he captained Algeria to win the Africa Cup of Nations. This victory gave the Desert Foxes their second continental title and secured his place among the country’s all-time greats.

Even though Algeria’s World Cup run ended in the Round of 32, Mahrez’s impact goes far beyond this tournament. His leadership, skill, and steady performances helped bring Algeria back to the top of African football and inspired many young players.

Known for his skill, creativity, and knack for changing games, Mahrez found success with both his clubs and the national team, becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers.

His retirement ends an era for Algerian football. The national team now faces the challenge of finding a new captain and creative leader as it starts a new chapter.

From his rise to becoming an AFCON-winning captain and one of Algeria’s best players, Mahrez leaves international football with a legacy of trophies, memorable moments, and a lasting impact on the sport.
