Switzerland cruise into the Round of 16 with a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria

Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Algeria on Friday morning.

The win ended Switzerland’s extended knockout-stage frustration after being eliminated in their previous seven appearances at this stage.

Algeria began strongly and appealed for a penalty in the eighth minute when Ramiz Zerrouki went down in the box, but the referee allowed play to continue.

Switzerland responded quickly. Two minutes later, Johan Manzambi set up Breel Embolo, who finished calmly into an empty net to give Switzerland the lead.

Algeria pressed for an equalizer but struggled against Switzerland’s disciplined defense, as the Europeans gradually took control.

Switzerland doubled their lead shortly after the restart when Dan Ndoye reacted first to a loose ball outside the area and struck inside the left post beyond Luca Zidane.

Switzerland then managed the game effectively, limiting Algeria’s chances and maintaining their defensive structure.

Fabian Rieder missed a late opportunity in the 81st minute, but Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The Swiss will now face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between Colombia and Ghana on Tuesday, July 7, in Vancouver.
