Opare claims Augsburg sought to damage his image after 2018 exit

Former Ghana international Daniel Opare has accused FC Augsburg of trying to tarnish his reputation following his contentious exit from the club in 2018.

In an interview with Joy Sports, the defender claimed that Sporting Director Stefan Reuter circulated misleading reports to the media in a bid to portray him negatively.

Opare believes the situation arose because the club could no longer profit from him as his contract was nearing expiration.

“A lot went on. The director put out stories suggesting I was the problem, but I understand that football is a business,” he said.

He maintained that the narrative was deliberately shaped to protect the club’s interests at his expense.

The conflict dates back to February 2018, when Augsburg halted contract talks and dropped him from the squad, accusing him of dishonesty over alleged unauthorized discussions with Schalke 04.

However, Opare insists he was simply seeking to advance his career, a move he claims the club blocked.

“Sometimes when clubs can’t make money from you, they try to damage your image. What the director did was unfair—he wanted to ruin my reputation for his own benefit,” he said.

“I was only trying to take the next step, but it didn’t work out. The Schalke move collapsed, and when I refused to accept terms I wasn’t comfortable with, I was dropped from the first team and made to train on my own.”
