Gyan: Semenyo will face high expectations at the World Cup

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has recognized the heavy weight of expectation resting on Antoine Semenyo’s shoulders as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, pointing out that the striker will carry not only the burden of his stellar club form but also the dreams of Ghanaian fans.

In an interview with Rolling Nations, Gyan remarked that Semenyo’s meteoric ascent has inevitably raised the bar, with supporters watching his every move for the national team.

“There will be a lot of pressure on Semenyo at the World Cup. Many people back home still have questions about his performances for the national team, but as a former player and striker, I understand what he is going through,” Gyan said.

He also noted that Semenyo’s achievements with a global football powerhouse will only intensify the expectations each time he dons the Black Stars jersey.

“When you are playing for one of the top clubs in the world and then join the national team, expectations automatically rise. People expect you to deliver consistently, so there will definitely be pressure on him,” Gyan explained.

Semenyo has had a standout season, quickly becoming one of the most buzzed-about Ghanaian talents in Europe. After making a high-profile switch from Bournemouth to Manchester City in January, he kept up his electric form, tallying 10 goals and three assists in the first half of the Premier League season.

At the Etihad Stadium, the forward kept dazzling, racking up seven more league goals and cementing his place among the league’s elite scorers. His star rose even higher when he scored the decisive goal in Manchester City’s FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea.

At the international level, however, Ghana has faced a difficult build-up to the World Cup. The Black Stars have gone five matches without a victory since securing qualification, suffering defeats to Japan, South Korea, Austria, Germany, and Mexico, with their latest setback a 2-0 loss.

The disappointing run also prompted a change in leadership, with Carlos Queiroz taking charge in April following Otto Addo’s departure. While the Portuguese coach has introduced a fresh tactical approach, positive results have yet to follow.

Even with the team’s recent setbacks, Semenyo stands out as a crucial figure for Ghana as the tournament approaches. After a breakout season with 17 league goals and acclaim as one of the Premier League’s brightest stars, he is poised to spearhead the Black Stars’ attack.

While his international goal tally has yet to match his club heroics, hope is building that the World Cup will be his stage to shine and prove his talent to the world.

Having previously supported the World Cup, Semenyo now returns as one of Ghana’s main attacking threats and a central figure in the team’s ambitions.

As Ghana readies itself for the battles ahead, all eyes will be on the in-form forward to ignite the Black Stars’ hopes on football’s grandest stage.
