Ex‑Ghana coach Chris Hughton reveals he is cancer‑free after prostate scare

Former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton has confirmed he is now fully recovered after being diagnosed with prostate cancer last year.

At 67, Hughton had surgery in May 2025 to remove his prostate. He has since recovered well and says he is now cancer-free.

Hughton said he stayed calm when he got the diagnosis and felt confident about his recovery from the start.

“The news didn’t frighten me,” he said. “I understand that everyone reacts differently, but my initial thought was that I would be fine.”

He added, “I never immediately felt it was life-threatening. I simply focused on doing what was necessary.”

Hughton explained that doctors found the illness early during a routine check-up while he was at Brighton.

Hughton pointed out that, as a Black man over 50 with a family history of prostate cancer, he was at higher risk. Regular blood tests showed higher prostate-specific antigen levels, which helped doctors act early.

“I received excellent medical guidance, was presented with all the treatment options, and ultimately chose to have my prostate removed,” he said.

“The recovery process has gone very well. It’s been a year since the operation, and I feel great with plenty of energy.”

He stressed the importance of staying active, both physically and mentally, during recovery.

Now, Hughton is sharing his story to encourage others to get checked early.

Hughton last managed Ghana in 2024. Over his career, he has led 169 Premier League matches and helped both Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion earn promotion to the top division.
