Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed support for the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Panama.
The Black Stars will begin their Group L campaign on Wednesday, June 17, in Toronto, Canada, aiming for a strong start to their World Cup journey.
In his message, Dr. Bawumia described football as a powerful force that unites Ghanaians and connects people worldwide.
“Football has always been part of our identity as a nation. It unites us and serves as a bridge that connects people around the world,” he said while wishing the team success at the tournament.
He expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to perform at the highest level and encouraged the players to draw inspiration from Ghana’s proud football history.
“I want to wish the team all the best. Black Stars, you have achieved great things before, and you can do so again,” he said.
“The entire nation is behind you, and I am behind you as well. Go Black Stars, go for glory, and go for gold.”
His message joins a growing wave of support from political leaders, football fans, and the Ghanaian diaspora as the team prepares for its opening match.
The Black Stars aim for a strong start against Panama as they seek to advance beyond the group stage and make a significant impact at the tournament.
Ghana and Panama are scheduled to face off on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 11:00 p.m. GMT.
However, the Black Stars will be without vice-captain Thomas Partey for the opener, as Canadian authorities denied him entry.Fielder appealed the decision, but a Canadian court dismissed his application on Tuesday, ruling him ineligible to travel for the match.
