Real Madrid have signed Ibrahima Konaté on a four-year contract. The France international will join the club after leaving Liverpool at the end of June.
The 27-year-old center-back will leave Anfield as a free agent after negotiations over a contract extension failed to produce an agreement, with differences reportedly emerging between the player and the club regarding his valuation and salary expectations.
Real Madrid confirmed an agreement with Konaté, who will stay at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 30, 2030.
Currently representing France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Konaté joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million and became a key figure in the Reds’ defence.
Over four seasons at Anfield, he made 183 appearances and helped Liverpool win the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
Konaté recently expressed disappointment at not being able to bid farewell to Liverpool supporters during the club’s final Premier League match against Brentford on May 24.
“I was deeply saddened that I didn’t get the opportunity to say goodbye to the fans,” Konaté said.
“At the time, I didn’t realize it would be my final appearance in a Liverpool shirt in front of them.”
Konaté is the latest addition to a Real Madrid squad being reshaped under Jose Mourinho, who recently returned for a second spell as manager.
The French defender joins several new arrivals at the Bernabéu this summer, including Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva, who signed on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City.
Spain international Marc Cucurella has also joined from Chelsea in a £52 million deal, as Real Madrid aim to strengthen their squad after a trophyless season.
After finishing behind Barcelona in La Liga and exiting the UEFA Champions League in the quarter-finals last season, Los Blancos hope their new signings will help restore the club to the top of European football.
