Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirms that Mikel Merino, the club’s new signing, will be unavailable for several weeks following a shoulder injury in his first training session.
The Spaniard made a £31.6m transfer to the Gunners from Real Sociedad.
Following Riccardo Calafiori’s arrival, Merino became Arsenal’s second summer signing and trained with the club on Thursday.
The collision with a team-mate caused a “small fracture” that will sideline the 28-year-old for a “few weeks”.
“Yes, very unfortunate. Yesterday he had a collision, and he has got a shoulder injury, unfortunately. It looks like he is going to be out for a few weeks,” said Arteta.
“He was excited, and everything looked perfect. He landed on the floor, and Gabi landed on top of him, and it looked like he had a small fracture, probably.
“We have to see. He was in so much pain, we have to wait to do some more tests.”
With wins over Wolves and Aston Villa, Arsenal started their Premier League campaign on a high note.
Arsenal will play against Brighton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners are one of three teams in the division that haven’t lost a match this season.
