Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan thanked the nation’s supporters after the Pharaohs returned home from their historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Egyptian team arrived at El Alamein Airport on Friday morning to a hero’s welcome. Thousands of fans came out to celebrate the team’s achievements, even though they exited in the Round of 16.
In an interview with On Sport, Hassan praised the unwavering support of the Egyptian people and dedicated the team’s success to the fans.
“Congratulations to the Egyptian fans. The joy of the people is the most important thing in the world. They deserve even more than this,” Hassan said.
The veteran coach said that seeing the happiness of the Egyptian public was the greatest reward for the team’s efforts during the tournament.
“The most important thing for me is that people are happy and joyful. God willing, the future will be even better.”
Egypt’s World Cup run ended with a dramatic 3-2 loss to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16. Still, the Pharaohs earned widespread praise for their spirited performances that changed the nation’s football history.
With Hassan as coach, Egypt won their first World Cup match and reached the knockout stage for the first time.
The Pharaohs started with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, then beat New Zealand 3-1, and held Iran to another 1-1 draw to qualify from the group stage.
They advanced to the Round of 16 by beating Australia in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw.
Egypt nearly achieved another famous result against Argentina, taking a 2-0 lead before the reigning champions made a late comeback to win 3-2.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, the team’s performances have been widely celebrated in Egypt. Fans greeted the players with joy after the country’s most successful FIFA World Cup campaign so far.
