French sports broadcaster L’Equipe has suspended presenter France Pierron after she made controversial comments about Belgium winger Jeremy Doku’s plan to leave the World Cup for the birth of his first child.
The controversy began during Friday’s edition of L’Equipe de Choc, when Pierron criticized Doku’s reported plan to go home in early July to be with his wife, Shireen, for their child’s birth.
During the program, Pierron questioned Doku’s decision, arguing that participating in a World Cup was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that many footballers dream of experiencing.
Her comments quickly drew criticism on social media, with many viewers calling them insensitive and outdated. The backlash led Pierron to make a public apology on Saturday.
“I was expressing a personal opinion during a heated debate,” she wrote on X. “I understand that my comments may have shocked or hurt some people, and I sincerely apologize. It was never my intention to diminish the importance of a father’s role alongside his partner and child.”
Despite the apology, L’Equipe moved swiftly to distance itself from the comments. In a statement released on Sunday, the broadcaster stressed that the remarks did not reflect the organization’s values and apologized to Doku.
“L’Equipe distances itself from these statements, which do not correspond to the values of the group,” the statement read.
The network later confirmed that Pierron was suspended from her presenting duties.
The controversy has also generated support for Doku from within the football community. England striker Ollie Watkins publicly backed the Belgian winger, describing the birth of his first child as a unique and special moment.
“It only happens once. Welcoming your first child into the world is a blessing,” Watkins said. “Calling it disgusting is wrong. I don’t think it’s anyone else’s business what he chooses to do away from football.”
Meanwhile, Belgium’s World Cup campaign has had more challenges, as Doku missed Sunday’s goalless draw against Iran due to a chest infection.
The 24-year-old has said that while he is committed to Belgium’s World Cup campaign, he hopes to be there for the birth of his first child if possible.
