WORLD CUP 2026: “I want to start more matches,” says Ghana forward Brandon Thomas-Asante

Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has acknowledged the importance of squad roles in football but admits his ambition is to start as many matches as possible for Ghana.

The Coventry City striker made a decisive impact off the bench in Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama, providing the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic stoppage-time winner as the Black Stars opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note at BMO Field.

Reflecting on his contribution, Thomas-Asante expressed satisfaction with helping the team secure all three points, although he admitted he would have loved to get on the scoresheet himself.

“I just wanted to make an impact. Of course, I would have liked to score as well, but the most important thing was getting the win,” he said.

The forward explained that throughout his career, he has often been called upon to influence games from the bench and understands the importance of being ready whenever the opportunity arises.

My style suits coming into games and making a difference. Throughout my career, even when I haven’t started, I’ve often had the chance to come on and affect the outcome.

Obviously, every player wants to start every match, but football doesn’t always work that way. You have to be prepared for any situation. Today my role was to come off the bench and help the team. I’m happy I was able to contribute.

Thomas-Asante also paid tribute to his teammates for their efforts before his introduction, highlighting the collective nature of the victory.

“It was a real team performance. To keep things level at 0-0, defend well, and create chances before I came on was down to the hard work of the entire team. Credit to the players and, of course, to Caleb for scoring the goal.”

Following his influential display against Panama, the striker will be hoping he has strengthened his case for a starting role in Ghana’s upcoming matches.

The victory leaves the Black Stars second in Group L, behind England, which opened its campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia.

Ghana’s focus now shifts to a crucial showdown with England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding the group stage against Croatia four days later.

With three points already secured, Carlos Queiroz’s side will be eager to build on their strong start as they pursue a first appearance in the knockout rounds since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
