Mahama rules out state funding for fans’ 2026 World Cup trip

President John Dramani Mahama has firmly dismissed the idea of using public funds to send supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the significant financial burden such sponsorship would entail.

The President explained that sending just one supporter to the tournament would cost around $11,000, making government sponsorship unrealistic. He stressed the importance of channeling state resources toward urgent national priorities instead of financing fan travel.

“We cannot justify spending public money in that way,” Mahama stated, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and prudent management of public resources.

His comments arrive as excitement builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Ghana’s Black Stars are intensifying their preparations and are poised to receive passionate support from fans at home and around the world.

Although the government will not sponsor fan travel, those eager to cheer on the Black Stars in person must arrange their own journeys, accommodations, and other logistics.
