Kim Björkegren named Black Queens head coach

Ghana’s Black Queens have a new head coach, Swedish national Kim Lars Björkegren, as announced by the GFA. Björkegren succeeds Nora Hauptle, whose term concluded in December 2024.
With 18 years of experience and a UEFA License A, Björkegren is exceptionally well-suited for this role. He started his career playing football for Swedish teams, including Allsvenska Åtvidabergs FF. His playing days ended prematurely at age 22 due to injury, leading him to pursue coaching.
The Swedish tactician’s impressive women’s football resume boasts victories in the Cyprus Women’s League (Apollon Ladies) and the Swedish Damallsvenskan (Linköpings FC), culminating in a 2020-2021 Cypriot Coach of the Season award. He shares the record with Sven-Göran Eriksson for being the second Swedish coach to win domestic titles in two countries.
Björkegren boasts a substantial coaching background, including scouting and analytical roles with Finland’s Women’s National Team, head coaching in China’s Women’s Super League (Beijing BG Phoenix), and a Technical Director position at Manila Digger FC (Philippines). He recently coached Racing Louisville in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Björkegren, renowned for his flexible and aggressive football approach, stresses discipline, teamwork, and adaptability. Ghana’s football style matches his method, emphasizing purposeful and engaging play.
The GFA believes Björkegren can lead the Black Queens to success, highlighting his women’s football experience, education, and sports psychology background.
A new technical team has been formed for the Black Queens.
The GFA and Björkegren have revealed a new Black Queens technical team. Charles Sampson and Anita Wiredu will serve as assistant coaches, and Nassamu Yakubu will serve as goalkeeper coach.
Kate Boachie-Agyemang will head the medical team, while Enoch Jordan Daitey will manage the team’s athletic conditioning. Nurse Asinawu Abubakari and Physiotherapist Margaret Foli will support her.
Patience Nana A. Quarshie and Adwoa Bayor will handle equipment management will handle equipment management, with Drucilia Arthur as the Welfare Manager. Veteran video analyst Ronnie Bergdahl will further bolster the team’s expertise.
The GFA is optimistic that the newly formed team can bring success to the Black Queens in international competitions.
