Qatar celebrated a milestone on Saturday, snatching their first-ever World Cup point with a thrilling last-gasp equalizer that sealed a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Group B.
After Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina split points in the group’s opener, Switzerland saw a golden chance to seize the top spot. Yet, despite controlling much of the match, they let the opportunity slip away.
Switzerland seemed destined for victory when Breel Embolo coolly slotted home a first-half penalty. But their struggle to turn pressure into goals would come back to haunt them.
The Swiss peppered the goal with 26 attempts and racked up an impressive 3.24 expected goals, but could only find the net once, and that from the penalty spot.

Their missed chances came back to bite in stoppage time. Homam Ahmed swung a hopeful cross to the far post, where Boualem Khoukhi’s timely challenge caused chaos, the ball ricocheting off Swiss midfielder Miro Muheim and into the net for a dramatic own goal.
The last-minute equalizer ignited wild celebrations among Qatar’s players and fans, as the Gulf nation finally claimed a historic first World Cup point.
Switzerland, on the other hand, will rue their missed chances and the heartbreak of letting victory slip away in the dying moments.

Speaking on ITV, former England defender Gary Neville suggested Switzerland showed quality but lacked the clinical edge and authority needed to be considered among the tournament’s elite sides.
With all four teams now level on one point after the opening round, Group B is wide open, promising a thrilling race for a place in the knockout stages.
