Appiah urges Black Stars to fight and deliver for Ghana at 2026 World Cup

Vice Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Stephen Appiah, has urged Ghana’s players to seize their moment and make the nation proud at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions are set to compete at the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

Ghana will be looking to improve on its recent World Cup performances after suffering group-stage exits in both Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022.

Speaking to 3Sports, Appiah, who captained the Black Stars at their maiden World Cup appearance in 2006, emphasized the significance of the opportunity before the current squad and reminded them that they are representing not only Ghana but also Africa on the global stage.

According to the former midfielder, the players must approach the tournament with determination and fully appreciate the occasion’s magnitude.

“My message to them is simple: this is their moment and their opportunity. The time has come, and they must embrace it. They cannot afford to take it for granted because we have seen players waste such opportunities and later regret it,” Appiah said.

The former Juventus and Fenerbahce star also pointed out how today’s football world has transformed, with social media amplifying both the spot players and their faces.

“Back in 2006, social media was not what it is today. Now, every opportunity can have a huge impact on your career, so players must make the most of every chance they get. That is one of the key things I would tell them,” he added.

Appiah went on to underline the immense responsibility that comes with donning the national jersey and carrying the hopes of an entire continent at football’s grandest stage.

“They must remember that they are not only playing for Ghana but also for Africa. Wearing that shirt is a privilege, and they need to understand how important it is. They should fight for every ball, every moment, and do everything possible to achieve success,” he said.

The Black Stars are currently in the United States, sharpening their skills as they prepare for their opening Group L clash against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field.

Carlos Queiroz’s side will then take on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group-stage campaign against Croatia on June 27.

Before the tournament kicks off, Ghana will test its mettle against Jamaica in a final warm-up on June 10, fine-tuning their preparations for a fifth FIFA World Cup adventure.
