Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has raised concerns about Manchester United’s young midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo. He believes the 19-year-old is not yet capable of being a regular starter for the Red Devils.
Souness believes it unfair to place United’s midfield’s burden on a teenager.
Widespread praise has accompanied Mainoo’s ascent to the United’s first team last season, solidifying him as a key player for both the club and the England national team. He made a significant contribution last season by scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final and featuring as a starter in England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Nevertheless, Souness thinks that the excitement around Mainoo might be too soon. During an appearance on Talksport’s White and Jordan Show, the ex-Liverpool midfielder advised against overwhelming the young player with expectations. “Mainoo might be a player, but it’s so Man United. When someone comes on the scene at Man United, they’re put into the superstardom category way before they’ve even become a good player,” Souness said.
Souness suggested that Mainoo should gradually be introduced to the team by using a rotation system instead of placing too much pressure on him to perform against strong opponents. “Mainoo right now should be a player that’s flitting in and out of a good team—not coming in and being asked to stand up and play against the very best teams,” he added.
Mainoo’s start to the current season has been tough, as Manchester United lost three out of four matches, including a 3-0 defeat against Liverpool. Liverpool’s third goal in the game was partly due to the young midfielder’s mistake, which emphasized his challenges.
Souness suggests that Mainoo’s growth should be handled with care to maximize his abilities. Mainoo will now focus on his international duties in England as they prepare for their upcoming Nations League games against Ireland and Finland.
